Chapter: Chapter 3: mirrors, strange dreams and a prophecy.

Mirrors, strange dreams and a prophecy.

  • "The Lowells said they'd take care of him. That's all I know. I guess Hawthorne was more informed, but-" "He's gone" the voice interrupts Adrian, "He was meant to be the Keeper's guide". "So that's why they killed him?" Adrian asks, frowning. "Yes... and no". Adrian notices something moving behind his back and suddenly turns to look at it: it's a floating mirror. "You just love riddles so much, mh?" "I'm careful" says the voice "others could be listening". "So you're not going to tell me who the Keeper is?" "No." Adrian rolls his eyes and rubs his neck: "...Awesome" he comments, sarcastically. But the voice isn't finished yet: "I will do better" it says, as green flames appear in the mirror, surprising Adrian, "I will show you".

  • "Let your faith guide you, and it will show you the way." Adrian looks up: "Are you... my guardian angel or something like that?" The voice doesn't answer immediately. Frowning, Adrian keeps looking around. Then... the voice explodes in a loud laughter. Adrian crosses his arms, blushing, embarassed: "...Fine, I guess the answer is no". "I am an ally" says the voice, now serious "that's all you need to know." "Yeah, a useless one" replies Adrian, "how am I supposed to find this Keeper? I don't even know his name!" "You don't...?!" The voice pauses again. "Oh."

  • "No" says the voice, "there's a prophecy. They can't do much against it." "And what makes you think that I can?" Adrian asks, angry. Too busy trying to look for the source of the voice, he doesn't seem to notice the book floating behind him... which hits him right on the head. "You're the only one left. Nobody else can do this." "Ouch! I'm NOT the only one left!" The book falls down on the floor, Adrian keeps looking around in search of the person talking. Meanwhile, the room has changed: there appears to be a corpse on the floor, covered by a blanket. A police line tape blocks the access to it. "What about the others?" Adrian asks. "One is a traitor. The other one can't do anything either. You can." "A traitor? Who?" "You will find out." Adrian isn't satisfied with the answer: "You could at least give me a hint..." "You have allies. They will help you. Just remember to follow your faith." A stone angel appears in front of Adrian, who turns to look at it, confused: "My... faith?!"

  • "The seal has weakened" continues the voice, as the room turns upside down and Adrian starts falling. He seems more worried about what the voice just said, though: "The seal? How do you even...?" "The Keeper has been left without a guide. He needs help." "Uh?" Adrian stops, floating in mid-air. The room has now fully turned upside down, but some objects are still floating around him. "But the Lowells said-" "The Lowells can't help him now" the voice interrupts him. "Why? A-are they...?"

  • Adrian's bedroom. There's a double size bed right under the window, a simple rug on the floor and a corkboard on the wall on the left, with pictures and papers attached to it. The tops of both night tables appear to be covered in herbs, potions and books. Adrian sleeps, until... "The time has come" says a mysterious voice. "Uh?" He sits on the bed. The voice continues: "Ten years have passed"; "Ten years..." Adrian repeats, as he slowly gets out of bed. He stops before he can put his feet on the floor. "What the...?" he says, startled, as he looks down. The bed is floating in the air.

  • Jorn straightens up, attentive: "Okay. What's on your mind?" "You'll have to deliver a little message for me". The vampire smiles, excited: "You mean... THAT kind of message?" "Yes. It may not be the most common way to contact someone, but we need to act fast". "Alright" says Jorn, "you can count on me, Father Uriel. Just tell me what to do and I'll try my best". "Thanks, Jorn" replies Father Uriel, "I know you will".

  • The priest scratches his nape, slightly embarassed: "I do. And I owe you an apology. I should have warned you about him. He's also involved in this, after all..." The vampire still seems confused: "Yes, but on which side?" "He's on our side" the man explains, "he was in the old coven. We can trust him". The vampire crosses his arms and scoffs at him: "Oh, sure, if you're into the "shoot first, ask questions later" type, I guess..." The priest looks away, again embarassed: "Yeah, he can be a bit... hot-headed. But now that Hawthorne is gone, the Keeper will need a guide. And Adrian is the only one with enough knowledge and skills to do it. I'd talk to him myself, but due to some events in the past, things could be... difficult. Hence why I need your help again".

  • “You’re only just starting to see the differences between right and wrong again” says the priest, “but that still doesn’t give you the right to judge others". The vampire looks away, saddened and defeated: “Understood. It… won’t happen again, I promise”. The priest looks at him, a hand on his hip: “Jorn… you don’t have to make promises to me. What did I tell you?” “Words aren’t enough, change requires effort”. Jorn's eyes still don’t meet those of the priest: “I know. It’s just… hard to put in practice”. The priest smiles: “It’ll take some time. But I wouldn’t have asked you to help me with this if I didn’t think you could do it”. “I… I see. Thank you, Father Uriel”. “Don’t mention it. Now, about Adrian—” “Who?!” the vampire interrupts him, confused. “The hunter” the man explains. “You know him?!”

  • "What happened, then?" asks the priest. The vampire looks away, now answering. "He's dead, isn't he?" the priest continues. Slowly, the vampire starts to explain: "T-there was a lot of blood in the house... I tried to resist, but--" "You couldn't" the priest finishes the sentence for him. The vampire stares at the man, angry: "He was a MURDERER! And he would have used his tricks to turn yet another innocent kid on THEIR side! It's not a big loss!" "He that is without sin, let him cast the first stone..." quotes the priest, looking at the vampire. He winces, turning his head away: "Urgh! A-alright, I was just..." "I know what you mean", says the priest "but it's not up to us to decide the fate of another living creature. Not like this". The vampire looks down and plays with his gloves, embarassed: "I... right. I'm such a hypocrite, aren't I?"

  • "What about Hawthorne?" the priest asks, as the vampire puts the diary back into a pocket of his coat. "Gone. I was too late". He runs a hand through his hair, slightly embarassed: "I really wanted to... I mean, I tried to get in, but..." "It's not your fault, Jorn", says the priest, saddened, "we knew it was going to happen, even if it's still bad news. Anything else to report? Did Kane give you a hard time?" Once again, the vampire looks away. "Ah, he... no. No trouble at all". "Any news about the Keeper?", the priest goes on. "Nothing we didn't already know", says the vampire, "the kid will be here next week". "So the Lowells truly have no idea what's going on... what else? Did the police arrest Kane?" The vampire shifts his weigh from one leg to another and plays with the sleeve of his coat, not looking at the priest in the face: "Uh... not exactly".
